Taking Back what's Mine? Females Rappers in a Male Rappers World
General Scope of Assignment First of all, I had not originally intended to write a prompt for this assignment, but it was requested, so please forgive me if this seems a bit scattered. The assignment for the final paper is more open than the previous ones. Essentially, it is simply to explore a subject of your choice that is related to hip-hop culture. There are a number of ways that you could approach this paper (some of which I have detailed below). Strategies & Suggestions There are several possible approaches that you could take to this assignment. One useful way to start developing your idea would be to choose a specific concept in hip-hop and explore the way it applies to different aspects of the culture. This could be done in several different ways. One approach would be choose an abstract artistic idea, such as “movement” or “rebellion” or ““creative re-interpretation,” and explore the way it manifests itself in different hip-hop contexts. Another would be to look at a specific kind of process or tool, such as sampling or battling, and explore why it has become an important part of hip-hop. What do these tools or techniques allow people to do, and why is that significant? Still another approach would be to choose a specific concept or process in hip-hop culture and explore the way it has evolved over time, and then discuss what those changes indicate about hip-hop itself and its relationship to the rest of the world. Another approach would be to examine the way hip-hop is used by a very specific community, either in the United States or elsewhere. What distinguishes their form of hip-hop from other forms? How is it similar? Another approach would be to choose a social or cultural issue that is not specific to hip-hop, and discuss how hip-hop culture addresses this issue, or fails to do so. Keep in mind that these are just suggestions, and that you are not limited to these approaches! The only subject that is not acceptable is a simple biography of an artist. However, it is acceptable to focus on a particular artist’s work in the context of a larger argument. For example, you may discuss how an artist’s work exemplifies a particular approach or concept. Due to the nature of the subject (i.e. hip-hop), it may be difficult or impossible to find traditional academic sources that address the issues you are interested in; you should feel free to use non-traditional sources, such as websites, social media and your own personal experience. Although this may sound counterintuitive, for a paper like this, it is almost always easier to start with a very narrowly defined topic and then broaden it out as you go along, as opposed to starting with a very broad subject. So, for example, rather than write a paper about “sampling” as a general concept, you might want to start with the idea of “How Pete Rock used sampling on the song ‘They Reminisce Over You,’” and then use that example as a way to talk about sampling in general, its history, etc. —— I would like to look into female rapper and accountability- We were discussing female rappers and majority of my class only spoke about Cardi b and nicki. A few mentioned lil Kim. They were debating who was the best female rapper. And How they took back their sexuality back from male rappers. And accountability of exploitation. I disagree- these female rappers are mainstream and entertaining but they not the best. (I brought up Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu and missy Elliot) To a certain extent female rappers did take back their sexuality from the lyric content of male rappers. But they exploit themselves. And is because sex sells and current female rappers are aware of it. Accountability is a two way street. Yes male rappers should be held accountable for starting the over sexualized portrayal of women but female rappers have taken a derogatory turn in “claiming/taking” back their sexuality. I would like to look into accountability, performativity and the content of the lyrics from male rappers to female rappers on objectifying the female body and over sexualizing. also look into the difference in lyric between main stream rappers like Cardi B, Nicki Minaj and rappers like Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot, and Erykah Badu. please! concise and cohesive thesis and sentences. Grammar free. Correct MLA citations.
